Former Editor of Qaumi Awaz, Lucknow Usman Ghani passed away. He died in KGMU in Lucknow and was buried at Aishbagh on Friday. It is undoubtedly a big loss for journalism and Urdu-walas in particular.
I was reading Iqbal Majeed’s Khud-Navisht and he had written a moving account of life in Aligarh in 50s. Usman was loved by all. Due to financial reasons, he had even decided skipping the breakfast and when his friends came to know of it, they were in tears. ‘Usman sabke laadle the, dost unki shervani ke batan lagate, unke naaz-naKhre uThaana, unheN gher kar dining hall meN lana, Ahmad Jamal Pasha ki zimmedariyoN meN se thaa…’
Urdu organisations may have forgotten but a college in Mumbai remembered Baba-e-Urdu Abdul Haq and organised a colourful programme. Poetic tributes, Ghazals, Nazms, quiz competition–all were part of the programme at Akbar Peer Bhai College in Mumbai.
Naya Daur, the prestigious Urdu magazine of Uttar Pradesh government has completed its 60 years. Chief Minister Mulayam Singh released the special issue at a function. Naya Daur’s editor W Rizvi was present. The magazine’s MA Jauhar issue has been very popular. Earlier, the series of special issues on Oudh had a huge success.
